About Eldaran National Forest

Eldaran National Forest spans over 500,000 acres in the central region of Oregon, featuring a remarkable blend of dense coniferous forests, mountain meadows, and pristine rivers. Dominated by Douglas-fir, western hemlock, and ponderosa pine, the forest provides critical habitat for diverse wildlife such as black bears, elk, northern spotted owls, and salmonid species. Established in 1934, Eldaran was created to conserve these vital landscapes while offering sustainable timber production and myriad outdoor recreational activities. Visitors can explore over 300 miles of maintained trails winding through rugged terrain and scenic vistas, including well-preserved old-growth groves and volcanic rock formations. The forest is also home to the Clearwater Wild and Scenic River, prized for fly fishing and whitewater rafting. Historic sites, such as the remnants of early 20th-century logging camps and interpretive heritage trails, enrich the visitor experience. Eldaran’s mild summers and snowy winters make it attractive year-round, with snow sports in winter and hiking, camping, and mountain biking dominant in warmer months. Its network of developed campgrounds and primitive backcountry sites offers a range of options for immersion into nature. The forest’s relative quiet and remoteness appeal to those seeking solitude away from crowded national parks, while its proximity to small towns ensures access to amenities and local culture. Eldaran National Forest is a quintessential Pacific Northwest destination balancing conservation with outdoor adventure and forestry heritage.
